5 Free Things To Do While Paying off Debt

Let’s be honest, paying off debt is not fun. It can take several years of a very strict budget which to a lot of people means that you have to just sit at home and stare at the wall to prevent you from spending money. Yes that would prevent you from spending money but you can have so much more fun than that!

Today I’m going to share with you 5 FREE activities that you can do while you are paying off debt. Heck, I’m out of debt and these are all fun activities that my husband and I do on a regular basis!

Find a local park or nature sanctuary.

We have a local park called Gumbo Lumbo that is a sea turtle rescue. They not only have adorable sea turtles that you can watch and learn about but they also have a great walking trail and lookout that you can see for miles. Simply Google “free parks in _________ county” and I’m sure you will find tons of hidden treasures!

Make a time capsule.

When I was in 6th grade our local town hall burnt down and when they rebuilt it the town created a time capsule that will be opened in 50 years. It was so fun to find different newspapers, CDs and all sorts of fun things that we will just shake our heads at. The time capsule doesn’t have to be opened 50 years from now but it could be in a year or two.

This would be a great activity to do with your spouse or kids. In order to not forget put a calendar appointment in your phone reminding you to open it and where you stored it! The worst thing would be to forget where you put it!!

Scan your old pictures.

This may sound morbid but whenever someone passes away in my family we pull out all the old albums and find our favorite pictures of that person to make a collage. Over the years I have taken hundreds of my favorites and absolutely love looking through them. Having a digital copy of all of the pictures is a great activity on a Saturday that you want to go out and spend money. I store all of my digital photos in Dropbox as well as some cringe worthy Facebook albums!

Assemble a family tree.

Learning about older generations is so fascinating to me. There is so much great information online on sites like ancestry.com and genealogy.com as well as your local library can help you track down century old birth certificates. This is also a great excuse to call distant relatives that you haven’t talked to since your wedding that can help you figure out the genealogy. I’m sure they have some great stories to tell too! Doing this can give you such a great understanding of your heritage and get in touch with your family roots.

Service the community and volunteer.

On a random Saturday afternoon my husband and I will go down to the local foodbank and help organize their shelves or serve food to the homeless. There are countless organizations that have volunteer opportunities. If you live near a beach you can go and pick up trash on the sand, that way you get some fresh air, exercise and help the environment.

Your turn!
